A Novel Slicing Strategy to Print Overhangs without Support Material

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers commonly need support material to print overhangs. A previously developed 4-axis printing process based on an orthogonal kinematic, additional rotational axis around the z-axis and a 45° tilted nozzle can overhangs up 100° without material. With this approach, layers are in conical shape no longer parallel plane; therefore, new slicer strategy is necessary generate paths. This paper describes slicing algorithm compatible with kinematics. The presented combination of geometrical transformation conventional software has three basic steps: Transformation geometry .STL file, path generation back G-code. comparison conventionally manufactured parts produced shows feasibility initial results terms surface quality dimensional accuracy.
